As we develop our Shakespearen scenes performed by students, we will post them. These postings will give us a chance to see what other teachers and students are doing all over the world.

We found fifteen minute versions of Shakespeare's plays both fun and educational. Cutting the script ourselves required close reading of text and developed critical thinking skills by forcing us to choose lines carefully. In addition, as actors, by focusing on a smaller text, we could produce a theater piece in a shorter time-frame. Sixth and lastly, it's fun performing Shakespeare at this energy level!

Although directors, like parents, shouldn't have favorites, I loved directing Henry IV Part I. The drama of the rebels, the comedy of Falstaff, the beauty of the Welsh music and the excitement of swordplay make this show incredibly rich. This particular evening we had a wonderfully responsive crowd. Voicing their concern when Falstaff dropped Hotspur's body to the floor, Falstaff shrugs his shoulders, points to the corpse and mouths to the audience, "What? He's dead...."

Much Ado was the first full-length Shakespeare play that we performed. With the popular resurgence of swing music and the post-war atmosphere of the text, we felt this setting worked remarkably well. A live band on stage, acrobatic swing dancing moves, and a real street-light under which Don John plotted his schemes, made this production of Much Ado great fun!

I visited Pudozh, Russia in October as part of the American Councils Excellence in Teaching Program. Knowing my passion for Shakespeare my host teacher organized a group of her students to practice their English by performing Shakespeare. My vision as I travelled by plane, train and automobile was to rehearse for the week, then perform for a small audience with the students reading from their texts. I arrived in Pudozh on Sunday, that night two of the students stopped by to begin working. On Monday, all of the students decided that they would perform their scenes off book and with their friends and family present! We rehearsed through the week, and performed these scenes Friday night.
